Physical therapists work with a broad range of patients, from those recovering from a sports injury to those rebuilding strength and coordination following neurological damage. Treatment is based on the individual's particular needs and may include stretches, exercises, and hands-on manipulation. Physical therapists may also employ machines that help the patient build function and range of motion as well as muscular capability.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the field of physical therapy is likely to grow by more than 35 percent through 2022. This growth occurs as the general population ages and experiences age-related illnesses and injuries, and is also attributable to the increased use of physical therapy among patients with chronic illnesses. As a result of this growth, the industry may create as many as 73,500 new physical therapy jobs between 2012 and 2022.
